Photograph the night sky at the Taalmonument
Photography enthusiasts who already possess a basic knowledge of their cameras have an exceptional opportunity on SATURDAY, 17 OCTOBER 2026, to further develop their skills during the Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument’s (ATM) advanced photography course on star trails. Moreover, it is a unique event as participants will enjoy exclusive after-hours access to the heritage site.
The course will be presented by experienced photographer Peter Haarhoff and is aimed at participants who are already familiar with their cameras and wish to take their photography skills to the next level. It combines theory and practice with a specific focus on stars and circumpolar stars – stars that, from a certain latitude on Earth, never disappear below the horizon due to their proximity to one of the celestial poles.
In addition to technical photography skills, attention is given to aspects such as selecting appropriate equipment for various photography styles, handling more complex lighting conditions, and the professional side of photography. The unique location of the Language Monument provides the ideal background for participants to apply their knowledge practically and capture the night sky through their camera lenses.
Participants must bring a DSLR camera with all the necessary components such as an SD card, tripod and a remote shutter (mechanical or electronic).
🎟️ + ℹ️ The course takes place on 17 October at the monument’s boardroom and parking area from 16:00 to 22:00. It costs only R595, which includes a free visit to the monument as well as light refreshments. The theoretical session runs from 16:30 to 19:30, after which participants can enjoy their own dinner before the practical session takes place from 20:00 to 22:00.
