Groen Galery
At the Afrikaanse Taalmonument
In honour of the monument’s architect, Jan van Wijk, this open-air gallery, the Groen Galery, was laid out between the granite rocks and wild olive trees. He not only felt strongly about nature, but also that the monument should serve as a living sculpture. That is why language-related research and especially the works of emerging Afrikaans writers, poets and musicians are exhibited in this gallery’s recycled wood and glass display cabinets.
Most visitors are not only very interested in the history of Afrikaans, but also curious about the development of the language and its latest creative forms, as it offers new perspectives on the world of Afrikaans-speaking Africans. Van Wijk’s ashes are also embedded in a rock here – look out for the plaque. The exhibitions are rotated every few months.
