Van taalpaal tot totem: Come talk to us
Engage with a panel of experts

The Afrikaans Taalmuseum en -monument (ATM) celebrates 50 years in 2025. This once again highlights the importance of this iconic, living sculpture that continuously reflects on the past, present, and future in order to meet the needs of a changing environment and community. Cultural institutions must create experiences that encourage knowledge, intercultural communication, and understanding of others. Furthermore, the ATM serves as a unique contact zone for diverse audiences where perceptions, interpretations, and especially misconceptions about the institution, Afrikaans speakers, and the language are challenged and discussed. So come and join the MULTILINGUAL debate IN STELLENBOSCH about the role of the ATM in the ever-changing and often divided Afrikaans and South African communities. Host Suan Booyens (a well-known media personality) will be in conversation with Michael Jonas (ATM director), Theo Kemp (Jake Gerwel Foundation) en Catherine Snel (former ATM curator). Everyone’s voice matters!
