Five lucky participants will receive annual permits and gift packs

In the run-up to the Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument’s (ATM’s) exciting 50th anniversary celebrations in 2025, the institution and the Historium Trust earlier this year launched a logo design competition for which R10 000 is at stake. Now, in honour of Language Day 2024*, the top five (Cameron Gertse, Daniel Petrus van Zyl, Jude Amori Swanepoel, Joseph Johannes Slazus and Kate Gannaway) out of 35 participants have been chosen and we are asking the public to provide their input via a poll, for which prizes will also be awarded.

Click on the poll here by 23:59 on 15 September at the latest and choose which one of the logos you think should be used by the ATM on its merchandise, clothing, letterheads, social media and website from 2025 to 2030. And while you’re at it, follow the ATM on Facebook and Instagram for the latest events and upcoming events, especially with the big Afrikaans 100 celebrations next year to commemorate the language’s centenary as an official language. And to find out if you won!

In exchange for this, 5 voters will receive annual permits and gift packs thanks to a random lucky draw on 30 November 2024. The permits include unlimited visits for two people to the monument, museum and bistro as well as access to the Full Moon Picnics for a whole year. Terms and conditions at taalmuseum.co.za.

* On this day 149 years ago, 14 August 1875, the Fellowship of True Afrikaners (GRA) was founded in the house that now houses the Afrikaans Language Museum. The GRA campaigned to elevate Afrikaans to an official and bible language.

The design combines the best of previous monument festival logos: it maintains the simplicity of the 2015 logo while incorporating the realism of the 2020 logo. This ensures that the Taalmonument is easily recognisable and pleasing to the eye without compromising simplicity.

The monument’s columns are the inspiration for the sound waves’ pattern and shape. It symbolises the word ‘TaalMonuMent’ being pronounced. ‘Hoor! Hoor!’ is an expression of support and agreement. We are celebrating 50 years, hear! hear!

JA

The design depicts the characteristic aspects of the monument, specifically the three columns that are visible from the town below Paarl Mountain. Since numerous images of the monument have the moon in the background, it was incorporated because it looks absolutely stunning.

A round format is the basis of the logo, similar to the flow of the monument, mostly based on art styles of the 1970s that consist of simplified solid shapes and colour. The view represents how a person on the main staircase sees the monument. Not only in terms of scale, but also symbolic of the passage of time and different influences on the development of Afrikaans.

K

The logo immediately conveys an African flair while incorporating meaningful details that reflect the diverse linguistic and cultural heritage of the monument, symbolising the influence of Western European, Khoikhoi and other African languages. Additionally, the curve of the bridge is included to highlight its symbolic importance.
