This week the Taalmonument hosted a highly successful three-day introductory course on book repair and binding, offered by specialist George Wentzel, a qualified master bookbinder with over 45 years of experience. The 16 participants created three books, while gold leaf and basic book repairs received special attention. Also included were working procedures, an overview of the parts of a book and the composition thereof, as well as demonstrations of and practical exercises in end papering, binding, leather binding, casing rounding and backing. “It was professional, fun and excellent,” said one participant, Elsette Strachan. “I especially enjoyed the practical sessions and have gained a new skill,” added another participant, Slindokuhle Tshisevhe. The Taalmonument again offers an advanced book repair course from 28 to 30 October 2019, suitable for participants who have already acquired the basic principles of book and paper repairs.
