Courses and workshops on various subjects are offered at the Taalmuseum and Taalmonument on a regular basis.

Museum studies course

* This is a golden opportunity to expand your knowledge substantially without enrolling for a degree course.

The Taalmonument plans to offer a series of short courses on aspects of Cultural History.
 
The first in the series is an introductory Museum studies course, to be held at the Afrikaanse Taalmonument in Paarl from 10 to 12 June 2013.

The presenter is Prof Matilda Burden, a lecturer in Cultural History at the University of Stellenbosch for the past 30 years. Prof Burden is also a member of the council or management bodies of several cultural, conservation and heritage organisations.

The course focus on cultural historical museums and includes subjects such as the role of museums in heritage conservation; the handling of material and non material culture in museums; the functions of museums; the client base of museums; storage conditions of artefacts; management aspects; and museums as communication media.                  

The course fee is R1 900 per person.

Introduction to Archiving Workshop

* Suitable for librarians, museum and heritage workers, records staff and archive assistants

The facilitator is Pétria Marais, who is a qualified archivist with many years of experience in the fields of records management and archives. Being a consultant, researcher, heritage worker, project leader and trainer, she came across the necessity and importance for libraries, registries, museums and other related disciplines to work together and to learn more about archiving.

This introductory three day workshop is designed for all information officers to learn what they need to know in terms of archiving. No previous knowledge is required.

The workshop includes practical sessions and focus on topics such as the differences between libraries, archives, museums and records centres (registries); acquisition and collection; appraisal (including the value of records and disposal instructions); sorting and arrangement; description / indexing; preservation; the disaster recovery plan; and tips on making the archives available.

Shooting star trails photography workshop

* Learn how to take time-exposure photographs at night, by using BULB setting on your camera, to record star trails as they move around the southern pole star. Learn what times are best, how to calculate the exposure, and how to improve your composition. You will also learn about white balance and ISO, noise and noise reduction, and the difference between 35mm and digital photography.

A practical workshop presented by professional photographer and registered tour guide Peter Haarhoff, of the Cape Photographic Company.  Anybody with any SLR camera may attend. This workshop is suitable for beginner and intermediate photographers, using a digital or 35mm single lens reflex camera.
