Welcome to the website of Die Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument (Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa).

The Taalmonument (language monument) is situated on Paarl Mountain, whilst the Taalmuseum (language museum) has been established in the former home of Gideon Malherbe, a founder member of the Society of True Afrikaners (GRA).

Our institution's vision is for the national Afrikaans Taalmuseum and Taalmonument to function in such a way that all South Africans can respect and appreciate Afrikaans. Who we are

The Taalmonument - do you love it or hate it? Is it magnificent and unique - or old and cold?

Our visitor questionnaire is now available online. It will only take you a few minutes to oomplete. Your feedback will help us to improve the experience of future visitors.  The questionnaire was designed in collaboration with Stephen Smith, an Australian PhD candidate focusing on language tourism.

Educational AND fun

Over the past year more than 2 000 learners attended educational programmes at the museum and monument.

Special programmes were presented on commemorative days, including International Mother Language Day, Heritage Day and Taaldag (Language Day). More than 400 learners attended the Amazing Museum Race presented  for the fourth time in collaboration with Paarl Museum, to celebrate Museum Month.

New centre

A new Information centre will open at the Taalmonument later this year. The centre will include exhibition space, offices and a lecture hall.

“We have always felt the need for a centre to orientate visitors to the Monument more effectively”, said Jack Louw, Director of Die Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en –monument. “There will be an exhibition area where visitors can interactively learn about the origin and development of Afrikaans through the use of audiovisual exhibits."
